Formula 1

Caryss Green, '25

Formula One is a fast-paced sport where 10 teams composed of 2 drivers each compete to win the driver and constructor championship. The teams compete around the world in around 20 Grand Prix per season. Each team engineers its own Formula One car that its drivers race in single-seater, open-wheel, and aerodynamic cars.

The drivers receive points for placing in the top ten. The first-place driver gets the most points at 25, the second place gets 18, the third gets 15, with 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, and 1 points for those who end in positions 4 through 10. The bottom ten finishers and the drivers who DNF (do not finish) receive no points.

Another way to earn points is to win the fastest lap of each race. The DHL Fastest Lap Award was created to see if the winner of each race was really the fastest driver on the grid. For each race today, one additional point is given to the driver who earns the fastest lap time for each race. At the end of the season, the award is given to the driver who sets the fastest lap times of the season.

This season, Zhou Guanyu set the fastest lap time in Bahrain, round one, Max Verstappen in Saudi Arabia, round 2, Sergio Perez in Australia, round 3, George Russell in Azerbaijan, round 4, and most recently, Max Verstappen in Miami, round 5.

Max Verstappen is currently leading the driver’s championship with a total of 119 points. His teammate, Sergio Perez is close behind with 105 points. Fernando Alonso is third with 75 points. Red Bull is leading the constructors' championship, with 224 points, Aston Martin has 102 points putting them in second, Mercedes is in third with 96 points, Ferrari is in fourth with 78 points, and Mclaren has 14 points in fifth place.

This is an exciting start to the season! Will Red Bull be able to hold on to that first-place spot, or will another team swoop in to steal it? Can Max Verstappen become a 3 time Formula One World Champion?
