The Educational Value of Raising Chickens

Ms. Towle

As someone who wakes up at 4:45am each and every morning, I’m often met with an abundance of questions. While most people’s early rising typically equates to work-out time, mine is often spent outside in the dust-filled barn tending to an array of animals flocking at my feet to be fed. While some have questioned why I welcome such an early amount of responsibilities. Part of the reason I turned to raising livestock so many years back is due in part to wanting to be as intentional with my time as possible on a daily basis. After having kids, this belief only rooted itself more deeply. Raising animals can teach us a lot about ourselves, as well as the world around us.

Next school year, Ensworth will be investing its own time and resources into implementing their own path for this educational opportunity right here on campus. Starting this summer, the new Eggsworth club will prepare a chicken coop right here on campus! In August, our first batch of baby chickens will arrive ready for brooding, and we need YOU to jump in and help. Interested in learning how to raise animals from incubation to processing? Curious as to the business side of agriculture including organic farming practices? Maybe you just want to devote some outside wellness time each week while allowing a natural way to embody empathy. As your club sponsor, I’ll expose you to a world that surprisingly overlaps with all areas of our academic wheel here with basic life skills, financing, the history of breeds, and even the legal world of food and egg production requirements. Want to know more or know how you can jump in and get involved this summer? Fill out this form: https://forms.gle/A7ihZq8ymiWx1URv8, or simply shoot me an email at: towlem@ensworth.com
