Therapy Dogs

Adeline Courtney, 27

As members of the Ensworth community, especially those of us who went to Red Gables, we all knew and loved Fluff, Dr. Reynolds’ therapy dog. Now that Fluff has sadly passed away, Theo has taken his spot as the lower school’s newest therapy dog, bringing smiles and happiness wherever he goes. Let’s explore the many benefits of therapy dogs on school campuses and learn about the high school’s attempt at getting one.

Therapy dogs have many emotional benefits they could contribute to the school. According to a study conducted in 2019 by the National Institute of Health, the presence of a therapy dog reduces stress and promotes happiness in many students. Other studies show that therapy dogs even contribute to the reduction of negative behavior in students. The benefits of these dogs can go even further than helping students emotionally, while also positively impacting students’ learning. Many programs have proven that these dogs stimulate better memory in students and also increase motivation, in turn, relieving any anxieties concerning learning that children may have. A study performed by a university in California even discovered that students who participated in a canine reading program increased their reading levels anywhere from 12% to a much higher 30%. Learning improvements such as that lead to a better overall outcome from these students, and also a growth in the confidence of these children.

After learning about the many benefits of therapy dogs, Nurse Dodd and Mrs. Flynn decided that one of these dogs might just be in Ensworth High School’s best interests. With studies showing therapy dogs improving attendance, trust, and relationships in the community, the two faculty members thought it would be a great idea. Sadly, the school did not agree with their idea, and denied their wishes, providing many valid reasons as to why this might not be the best decision for Ensworth. This rejection shines light on many reasonable negatives that therapy dogs come with. For instance, many students have dog allergies, and while this may not seem like the biggest deal, allergies are uncomfortable and sometimes serious. The health of students must always be the first priority. Another reason explored was that the training and classes that these dogs require to become certified can be a lot. These classes are not only expensive, but also include long hours.

While Ensworth High School may not be getting a therapy dog, it is still important to remember the many schools all over the world that are positively impacted by these furry friends and companions every day. While it might not be the best for Ensworth, it’s important to consider that these dogs have made schools a better place for learning (“How do Therapy Dogs Help in the Classroom?”).
